Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali was shot in London in 1987, Britain expelled Israeli officials after a Mossad double agent was jailed, and no one has been charged with the murder

On 22 July 1987 a gunman shot Naji al-Ali in the back of the neck as he walked from his car to the London office of the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Qabas, Ives Street, Knightsbridge. He died in hospital on 29 August 1987, aged 51. Police found a 7.62 mm Tokarev pistol on open ground in Paddington on 22 April 1989; test firings matched a cartridge case from the scene. Police described a gunman of about 25 and two men in their 50s who fled in a silver-grey Mercedes. In August 1987 police found six suitcases of weapons and explosives in a Hull flat rented by Ismail Sowan, a Palestinian researcher. Sowan told police he was a Mossad double agent assigned to watch the PLO unit Force 17. He denied shooting al-Ali. He was convicted of firearms offences and reportedly jailed for 11 years†. Mossad had not told MI5 about the cache. Britain refused re-entry to an Israeli diplomat and later expelled attache Arie Regev. Margaret Thatcher reportedly ordered Mossad's London base closed. On 29 August 2017 the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command reopened the case with a new appeal. As of that date no one had been charged. The family believes Yasser Arafat was responsible; this is the family view only.

What the law took from it

A public figure who angers armed groups needs a documented security plan; an unsolved killing leaves heirs and publishers with no verdict to rely on.
