Michael Schumacher's family has kept his condition secret since 2013, and a former guard tried to sell his medical records for €15 million
Michael Schumacher suffered a head injury skiing in the French Alps in December 2013. Since then his wife, Corinna, has released almost no information about his health. In 2023 the German magazine Die Aktuelle published an interview with him generated by artificial intelligence. The family sued, and the publisher paid them €200,000†. In June 2024 the family received a demand for €15 million. The blackmailers had about 900 photos, nearly 600 videos and Schumacher's digitized medical records. Prosecutors said the files came from Markus Fritsche, a former security employee of the family. On 12 February 2025 the Wuppertal district court convicted nightclub bouncer Yilmaz Tozturkan, 53, who had prior convictions, of attempted extortion and sentenced him to three years. His son, Daniel Lins, received a six-month suspended sentence. Fritsche received a two-year suspended sentence for aiding the crime. The family called the sentences too lenient and appealed. Schumacher's condition remains undisclosed in 2026.
Medical secrecy for a famous patient depends on everyone with access to the files, including staff who later leave.
