The princes of Rus' agreed at Liubech in 1097 that each would keep his father's lands, and two of them then blinded a third

Volodymyr Monomakh called the princes of Rus' to Liubech in 1097 to end their feuds and unite them against the Cumans. Five came: Sviatopolk II of Kyiv, Oleh and Davyd Sviatoslavych, Davyd Ihorovych of Volodymyr and Vasylko Rostyslavych of Terebovlia. They abolished succession by seniority and agreed that each prince would hold the lands his father had ruled. The chronicle records the words "let each hold his patrimony." After the meeting Vasylko stopped in Kyiv to pray. Davyd Ihorovych told Sviatopolk that Vasylko was plotting against him. Vasylko declined Sviatopolk's invitation to a name-day feast because he was hurrying home to prepare a war against the Poles, and Davyd treated the refusal as proof. Sviatopolk handed him over. In the account retold by the Brockhaus-Efron encyclopedia, Vasylko was taken toward Bilhorod and held down in a hut under a board on which two men sat until his chest bones cracked, and a herdsman of Sviatopolk's, a Tork, blinded him. Davyd jailed him at Volodymyr. Monomakh and the Sviatoslavych princes took Vasylko's side. Davyd was driven from Volodymyr in 1099. The congress at Vytychiv on 10 August 1100 took the Volodymyr principality from him and gave him Busk, Ostroh and Dubno. Vasylko kept Terebovlia, blind, until he died on 28 February 1124. In 1122 he paid 20,000 grivnas of silver to ransom his brother Volodar from the Poles. Liubech did not end the princes' wars.

What the law took from it

A family settlement is only as strong as its enforcement; the Liubech agreement held only because the other princes took up arms against the one who broke it.

Record vs. record

The Encyclopedia of Ukraine places the blinding at Zvenyhorod and notes other sources say Bilhorod, and dates the Vytychiv congress to 10 August 1100: | Brockhaus-Efron places it on the road to Bilhorod and dates the princes' ruling on Terebovlia to 1101:
