Police found the P2 lodge's 962 names in Licio Gelli's factory in 1981, and after he died prosecutors asked a court to confiscate his villa from a dead man

Licio Gelli led Propaganda 2, a covert lodge of the Grande Oriente d'Italia. On 17 March 1981 financial police sent by Milan magistrates Gherardo Colombo and Giuliano Turone, who were investigating Michele Sindona, searched his home, Villa Wanda, and found nothing. At his Giole textile firm in Castiglion Fibocchi they found a suitcase and a safe with 962 names: 59 members of parliament, 119 senior officers, journalists, a constitutional judge and Silvio Berlusconi. Prime Minister Arnaldo Forlani published the list in May and was forced to resign. Law 17 of 25 January 1982 dissolved the lodge. In June 1982 banker Roberto Calvi, a member, was found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London. Gelli was arrested in Geneva in 1982, escaped from a Swiss prison hospital in 1983 and was extradited in 1987. He was sentenced to 18 and a half years for the Ambrosiano fraud and spent his last years under house arrest at Villa Wanda. Gold was found there. In 2006 the villa was auctioned to pay Ambrosiano court costs, and Gelli bought it back. In 2013 police seized it in a 17-million-euro tax case against Gelli and his three children; the charges became time-barred. Gelli died at the villa in December 2015, aged 96. In 2017 Arezzo prosecutor Roberto Rossi asked the court to confiscate the villa as the property of a dangerous person, though dead. No ruling on that request was found†.

What the law took from it

Putting a house in a family company did not stop the state; the tax lien, the auction and the post-mortem confiscation all went after the same villa.

Record vs. record

The Local (AFP) says police found 179 gold ingots weighing 168 kg at the villa in 1982 ( the Boston Globe and Il Foglio date the gold, about 160 kg in flower pots, to 1998 (
