Judy Garland's fifth husband buried her in New York; 48 years later her children moved her to Hollywood
Judy Garland died at 47 of an accidental barbiturate overdose, three months after marrying nightclub manager Mickey Deans. She had owed the Internal Revenue Service several hundred thousand dollars since failing to pay taxes in 1951 and 1952. Her estate at death was reported at about $40,000†, and the bequests in her 1961 will could not be paid†. Deans flew her body to New York, where about 20,000 people filed past her coffin at the Frank E. Campbell chapel. He chose Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale rather than Los Angeles. He told The New York Times: "I didn't want her where tourist buses and that sort of thing go through." Her children, Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft and Joey Luft, did not decide. A family spokeswoman said in 2017: "Her children had no say in the matter of her burial." Deans died in 2003. In January 2017 the children had her crypt opened and her remains flown to Los Angeles. She was placed in a new private mausoleum at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, named the Judy Garland Pavilion, with room for her three children and their descendants. The family held a private service on 10 June 2017, her 95th birthday. In 1978 Sid Luft auctioned about 500 of her belongings for $250,000 for her heirs†. In 2026 she remains at Hollywood Forever.
The person who controls the body at death decides the grave, and a recent spouse can outrank adult children for decades.
