Sid Vicious asked to be buried beside Nancy Spungen; her mother said no, and his mother scattered his ashes on the grave anyway

Sid Vicious, born Simon John Ritchie, was charged with murdering his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, who was found stabbed at the Chelsea Hotel in October 1978. Virgin Records paid his legal fees. He was released from Rikers Island on 1 February 1979 and died of a heroin overdose that night at a party his mother, Anne Beverley, attended. He was 21. Beverley produced a note she said she found in his jacket: "Please bury me next to my baby." Spungen was buried in a Jewish cemetery in Pennsylvania, and an interfaith burial was not possible. Vicious was cremated at Garden State Crematory in New Jersey. Photographer Eileen Polk later said Beverley asked Spungen's mother, Deborah Spungen, for permission to scatter the ashes on Nancy's grave and was refused. Polk said Jerry Only of the Misfits then drove Beverley, her sister and two friends to the grave, where Beverley scattered the ashes. Reports name the cemetery as King David Cemetery in Bensalem†. A rival story that the urn broke at Heathrow is unconfirmed. In 1996 Beverley sold her son's white Fender Precision bass to Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones for £2,000; she died later that year†. Jones wrote that the estate passed to maternal cousins. In 2026 the Spungen grave has no marker for Vicious, and his share of Sex Pistols income goes to those relatives†.

What the law took from it

A burial wish written in a note binds no one, and the family that controls the grave controls who lies in it.
