Jeffrey Epstein signed his will two days before he died in jail; victims' claims cut the $577 million estate to about $107 million
Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges in July 2019. On 8 August 2019, in jail in Manhattan, he signed a will. He died two days later. The will was filed in the US Virgin Islands, where he owned two islands, and listed his worth at $577,672,654. It named his lawyer Darren Indyke and his accountant Richard Kahn as executors and moved all his property into "The 1953 Trust", named for his birth year. The will named no beneficiaries. In June 2020 the estate opened the Epstein Victims' Compensation Program. It closed in August 2021 after paying about $121 million; claimants who accepted gave up suing the estate. On 30 November 2022 the estate settled the Virgin Islands government's suit for more than $105 million plus half the proceeds of Little St. James. Stephen Deckoff bought both islands for $60 million in May 2023. A trust document released by the Justice Department in January 2026 named about 40 potential beneficiaries, including his girlfriend Karyna Shuliak for $100 million, Indyke for $50 million, Kahn for $25 million and Ghislaine Maxwell for $10 million. The estate's lawyer said no beneficiary is paid before all claims. In February 2026 the executors agreed to pay up to $35 million to settle a 2024 class action alleging they helped finance the abuse; they deny wrongdoing. Judge Arun Subramanian gave preliminary approval on 3 March 2026. On 21 October 2026 New Mexico sued Indyke and Kahn and asked a federal court to block their bequests.
A will that pours everything into an unnamed trust keeps the beneficiaries private but leaves the assets open to every claimant first.
NBC and most outlets report about 150 claimants paid; later 2026 reports say 136:
