Jabir, with only sisters to inherit, asked Muhammad how to leave his estate; the last verse revealed answered him, and the caliph Umar said he never fully understood it
Al-Bukhari records that Jabir ibn Abd Allah's father died leaving seven or nine daughters, and that Jabir married a widow so someone experienced would look after his sisters. Later Jabir fell so ill that he was unconscious when Muhammad and Abu Bakr came on foot to visit. Muhammad poured water over him and he woke. Jabir asked what to do with his property, since he had no child or parent and would leave his estate through kalalah, to collateral relatives. Ibn Kathir says the answer was Koran 4:176, which al-Bara' reported as the last verse revealed. One sister takes half; two or more sisters take two-thirds; brothers and sisters share with the male taking two shares. The verse did not settle every case. The second caliph, Umar, said he wished Muhammad had explained three matters, including kalalah and the grandfather's share. He said Muhammad once poked him in the chest and told him the verse at the end of the chapter should suffice. Companions split on the next case. Ibn Abbas and Ibn al-Zubayr held that a sister got nothing if the dead man left a daughter. Abu Musa gave the daughter half and the sister half. Ibn Mas'ud gave the daughter half, the granddaughter a sixth and the sister the rest, and Abu Musa deferred to him. Ibn Kathir writes that the majority of scholars rejected the view of Ibn Abbas.
A rule written for one family's question left the next family's question to be argued by jurists.
