Iran's revolutionary court had plastics maker Habib Elghanian shot in 1979, and the state took the tower he built
Habib Elghanian founded Plasco, Iran's largest plastics maker, in 1959. With his brothers he ran a group that made plastics, refrigerators, stoves and aluminium. In 1962 they built the 17-story Plasco Building in Tehran, one of the first modern high-rises in the Middle East. He led Iran's Jewish community from 1959. In 1975 the Shah's anti-corruption campaign jailed and fined him. He left Iran as the revolution began and came back weeks after Khomeini took power. He was arrested in early 1979; sources give 17 February, 15 March and 16 March. The charges included corruption, contacts with Israel and "friendship with the enemies of God". A revolutionary court of three judges tried him in about an hour; his granddaughter says under twenty minutes. He was shot by firing squad in Tehran in May 1979, aged 66. Wikipedia says the state confiscated all the family's property in Iran†. His body was buried in an unmarked grave. Many of Iran's roughly 80,000 Jews left after his death. The Mostazafan Foundation, set up to take the assets of the Shah and rich private owners, took over the Plasco Building and rented it to more than 400 businesses. On 19 January 2017 the tower caught fire and collapsed, killing at least 30 firefighters.
