Barbara Hutton inherited the Woolworth fortune at 21, married seven times, and died with $3,500 in the bank
Frank W. Woolworth opened his first successful five-and-dime store in 1879. His daughter Edna married Franklyn Hutton. Edna died at The Plaza hotel on 2 May 1917, aged 33. The record gives suffocation from mastoiditis; rumours of suicide persist. Her daughter Barbara, four, found the body. In 1924 Barbara's grandmother Jennie Woolworth died and left her $26.1 million in trust, with a further $2.1 million from Edna's estate. Her father administered both. In 1930 her debut ball cost $60,000 during the Depression. At 21, in 1933, she took control: Wikipedia gives $42 million plus $8 million from her mother's estate, and Hello! magazine gives $28 million. She married seven times. Her father paid a $1 million dowry for the first, to Alexis Mdivani in 1933. Count Kurt Reventlow fought her for custody of their son. Cary Grant asked for nothing in the 1945 divorce. Porfirio Rubirosa was married to her for 53 days and reportedly received $2.5 million, a plane and polo ponies. Her only son, Lance Reventlow, died in a plane crash near Aspen in 1972, aged 36. She died of a heart attack at the Beverly Wilshire on 11 May 1979, aged 66. One biographer wrote that $3,500 remained; people close to her disputed it. She is buried in the Woolworth mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
A fortune paid out in full to a young heir has no trustee to stop it being spent.
