The CIA gave Army scientist Frank Olson LSD without telling him, he fell from a New York hotel nine days later, and the $750,000 his family accepted later blocked their murder suit

Frank Olson was a bioweapons scientist at Fort Detrick, Maryland. At a cabin at Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland, CIA officers served him a liqueur spiked with LSD without his knowledge. Nine days later, in the early morning of 28 November 1953, he fell from his room at the Hotel Statler in New York and died. In 1975 the Rockefeller Commission first linked his death to MK-ULTRA. On 21 July 1975 President Gerald Ford met the Olson family at the White House and apologised. Congress authorised a $750,000 settlement, which the family accepted in exchange for dropping its legal claims, and the family received CIA documents. The family had the body exhumed in 1994. On 28 November 2012 his sons, Eric and Nils, sued the CIA in federal court in Washington. They alleged that their father was pushed from the window after he developed misgivings about extreme interrogations he had witnessed, and that a CIA scientist present at the fall had been one of the two men who drugged him. They said the CIA had induced them to take the money by falsely claiming it had disclosed everything. A federal judge dismissed the suit. The sons told the Baltimore Sun in 2012 that they believed their father was murdered.

What the law took from it

A settlement that releases all claims also releases claims the family does not yet know it has.

Record vs. record

The ABA Journal's 2023 history says Olson's room was on the 10th floor; the sons' 2012 complaint, as reported by the ABA Journal, says 13th floor:
