ETA killed the 17th Duke of Veragua, a descendant of Columbus and a Spanish vice admiral, in Madrid in 1986
Cristóbal Colón de Carvajal y Maroto was born in Madrid on 29 January 1925. He held the titles Duke of Veragua, Marquis of Jamaica and Admiral of the Ocean Sea, which descend from the 1536 settlement between Columbus's heirs and the Crown. He was a career naval officer and had reached the rank of vice admiral†. On the morning of 6 February 1986, attackers fired on his car in central Madrid and threw a grenade inside. He and his driver, Manuel Trillo, were killed. His aide, Commander Antonio Rodríguez Toube, was seriously wounded. ETA was blamed. A 2018 column in Diario de Cuyo names two ETA members, Ignacio Aracama Mendía and José Luis Urrusolo Sistiaga, as identified by witnesses. It also says he was chosen because he bore the name Cristóbal Colón while Spain was preparing for 1992. Those are the columnist's statements; no court record was confirmed in this pass. His son, Cristóbal Colón de Carvajal y Gorosábel, born in 1949, inherited the titles in 1986. In the same column, the widow says that around 1992 her son avoided interviews and public events because he did not want to share his father's fate. The son was grand marshal of the 1992 Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena†. He holds the dukedom in 2026†.
A famous name is a security risk as well as an asset, and families that carry one plan for the risk.
