Elcano was granted 500 ducats a year for the first circumnavigation, was never paid, and left church bequests payable only from what the King owed him

Juan Sebastián Elcano of Getaria brought the Victoria back to Spain in September 1522 with 18 men, completing the first circumnavigation. On 23 January 1523 Charles I granted him a pension of 500 ducats a year for life. It was to be paid by the new Casa de la Especiería in A Coruña. On 20 May 1523 he also received a coat of arms with a globe and the motto "Primus circumdedisti me." On 15 April 1525 the King ordered the arrears to be paid when Elcano returned from the Loaísa expedition. He did not return. On 26 July 1526, aboard the Santa María de la Victoria in the Pacific, he made his will, with Andrés de Urdaneta writing it down. He stated that the King owed him 1,750 ducats. He never married. He named as heirs his son Domingo, by Mari Hernández de Hernialde of Getaria, and a daughter by María de Vidaurreta of Valladolid. He gave his mother, Catalina del Puerto, the use of his property for life. His church bequests were to be paid out of the King's debt to him. His mother was still suing the royal treasury for his pay and pension in 1533†. His relatives were still demanding payment in 1567†. A bequest of 24 ducats to the Santa Faz monastery in Alicante was paid by the Spanish Navy in 1944, as 15,000 pesetas†.

What the law took from it

An estate whose main asset is money owed by the state is worth only what the state chooses to pay, and it may pay centuries late or never.
