Eazy-E married on his deathbed and left Ruthless Records to his bride; his son challenged the marriage 21 years later
Eazy-E, born Eric Wright, announced he had AIDS in March 1995. He married Tomica Woods on 14 March 1995 and died less than two weeks later. His will left his property, including Ruthless Records, to her. Days after his death, Mike Klein, Ruthless's former director of business affairs, sued claiming he owned 50 percent of the company, then valued at about $10 million. Woods said she was the sole owner. Eazy-E had several children with several women†. In 2016 his son Eric Wright Jr., who performs as Lil Eazy-E, filed papers alleging that his father was "debilitated" and "under the heavy influence of medication" when he signed the will. He also alleged that the marriage license was filed confidentially and lacked his father's handwritten signature. These are his allegations, not court findings. Woods-Wright sued him over his use of the Ruthless Records and N.W.A. names, and he countersued. No final ruling in his favour was found†. Woods-Wright still runs Ruthless in 2026†.
A will and marriage signed in the last days of a fatal illness are the documents most likely to be challenged, so capacity evidence should be recorded at signing.
