Evergreen's founder left his whole personal fortune to his youngest son, the three older half-brothers removed him from the airline, and the courts upheld the will
Chang Yung-fa founded Evergreen Marine in 1968 with one used bulk ship and built Asia's largest container fleet and EVA Air. He had four children with his first wife, Lin Chin-chih, and one son, Chang Kuo-wei, with his second wife. He died on 20 January 2016, aged 88. A sealed will made in 2014 named Chang Kuo-wei sole heir to his savings, shares and property, worth NT$14 billion, and successor as group chairman. In February 2016 Kuo-wei announced he had taken the top post; the group said it "regrets" the announcement. His eldest half-brother, Chang Kuo-hua, and the other two brothers used their combined stake in EVA Air to call an extraordinary board meeting and remove him as chairman in 2016. Wikipedia says the vote took place while he was flying an EVA Air plane to Singapore†. The third son, Chang Kuo-cheng, sued to invalidate the will. Kuo-wei won at first instance and in the Taiwan High Court, and on 14 August 2024 the Supreme Court dismissed the final appeal, ending the case. Kuo-wei founded Starlux Airlines in 2018 and listed it on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 2024. Evergreen said the ruling was a family matter of major shareholders and would not comment.
A will can pass a founder's shares, but the shares other heirs already hold decide who runs the company.
