Marquis Casati Stampa shot his wife, her lover and himself; his daughter inherited at 19 and sold Arcore to Berlusconi for unlisted shares

On 30 August 1970 Marquis Camillo Casati Stampa di Soncino shot his wife, Anna Fallarino, and her lover, the student Massimo Minorenti, in their Rome flat, then shot himself. Investigators found his diary and about 1,500 photographs of his wife with other men. His will left everything to Fallarino. The autopsy found she had died before him, so the fortune, put at more than 2.4 billion lire, passed to his only child, Annamaria, born on 22 May 1951 to his first wife. A juvenile court placed her affairs under Senator Giorgio Bergamasco as guardian, with the lawyer Cesare Previti as deputy guardian. She married and moved to Brazil. Through Previti she sold Villa San Martino at Arcore, with its picture gallery, furniture and a library of about 10,000 volumes, to Silvio Berlusconi for 500 million lire. Payment was deferred and made in shares of companies not listed on any exchange. Italian accounts put the property's value at 1.3 to 1.7 billion lire†. She could not sell the shares and sold them back to Berlusconi and Previti for 250 million lire. In the early 1980s the villa secured a loan of 7.3 billion lire. Berlusconi moved in at the end of 1974. Previti was later disbarred, and in 2006 the Court of Cassation gave him a final six-year sentence for judicial bribery in the IMI-SIR case. Berlusconi died in June 2023. In 2026 his ashes lie in the Chapel of San Martino on the Arcore estate, next to his parents.

What the law took from it

An heir under guardianship depends on the honesty of the guardian and the lawyer, and payment in unlisted shares can leave the seller with nothing she can spend.
