Argentine president Carlos Menem's son from his prison-era affair was recognised by a court only in 2006, after his mother's death
In 1981 the military regime held Carlos Menem, then a former governor of La Rioja, in internal exile in Las Lomitas, Formosa. He was moved to the home of the Meza family, where he began a relationship with Martha Meza, a rural teacher about 22 years younger. Their son, Carlos Nair, was born that year. Menem became president in 1989. In 1995 Martha Meza said on Mariano Grondona's television program that she had a son with the president, and said she had received threats. She later became a national deputy. On 12 January 2003 she died after swallowing herbicide. Carlos Nair was not judicially recognised as Menem's son until 2006. Menem's son Carlos Jr. had died in a 1995 helicopter crash. Menem died in Buenos Aires on 14 February 2021, aged 90. His recognised heirs were Carlos Nair, his daughter Zulema (Zulemita), and Máximo, his son with Chilean presenter Cecilia Bolocco, born in 2003. Under Argentine forced heirship each child has an equal reserved share. Carlos Nair publicly disputed the handling of the succession with his half-sister†. The succession was before the Buenos Aires civil courts after 2021†.
A child recognised by a court shares equally with children born in marriage; the date of recognition does not reduce the share.
