Allen Klein managed three Beatles, sued them for $19 million after they fired him, and took $5 million to settle

John Lennon appointed Allen Klein his adviser on 28 January 1969. Klein renegotiated the Beatles' EMI contract and cut costs at Apple Corps. Paul McCartney backed his father-in-law, Lee Eastman, and sued the other three Beatles in London's High Court to dissolve their partnership. A receiver was appointed over the Beatles' business in March 1971†. After Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr dropped Klein, he sued them in July 1973 in New York Supreme Court for $19 million, seeking repayment of loans and advances. In November 1973 they and Apple countersued, alleging ABKCO breached its fiduciary duties. Lennon settled in April 1975 for $135,000. On 8 January 1977 Apple agreed to pay ABKCO $5,009,200 to settle all US and UK claims, and ABKCO paid $800,000 to Apple Records, Apple Films, Harrisongs and Starr. One source gives the settlement as $4.2 million. In 1978 ABKCO bought the copyright to "He's So Fine," the song Harrison was found to have copied in "My Sweet Lord," for $587,000. The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit held in 1991 that Klein had switched sides and ABKCO had to transfer the song to Harrison for that price. Klein had earlier taken rights to most Rolling Stones songs recorded before 1971. He died of Alzheimer's disease at 77. ABKCO, which he founded, still controls those 1960s Stones rights†.

What the law took from it

A manager who holds the band's contracts can turn the end of the management into a claim against the band.
