The Chola heir Aditya Karikala was murdered, and his brother Rajaraja seized the killers' lands and their relatives' lands years later
Aditya II, called Aditya Karikala, was crown prince and co-regent of the Chola king Parantaka II. He had defeated the Pandya king Vira Pandya and taken his head. The Tiruvalangadu plates later said only that Aditya "disappeared" with a desire to see heaven. He had been murdered. His uncle Uttama Chola took the throne and reigned until 985 without visible action against the killers. Aditya's younger brother then became king as Rajaraja I. In his second regnal year, an inscription in the Anantisvara temple at Udaiyargudi records his order to the assembly of Viranarayana Chaturvedimangalam. It was to confiscate the lands and houses of those guilty of treason for killing "Karikala Chola who took the head of the Pandya," and of those near to them by blood. The named men included Soman, Ravidasan alias Panchavan Brahmadhirajan and Parameswaran alias Irumudichola Brahmadhirajan, both royal officials. Two royal officers supervised the sale. The lands and six houses went for 150 kalanju of gold to Bharatan alias Vyala Gajamalla Pallavaraiyan, who endowed them to feed Brahmins at the temple. The proceeds went to the treasury. The historian K.A.N. Sastri read the record as implicating Uttama; later scholars dispute this. The inscription remains in the temple.
Confiscation that reaches the family of the guilty turns one crime into the loss of every relative's land.
