A landowner whose family gave the Viet Minh 700 taels of gold was shot as the land reform's first example in 1953, and her family found her bones in 1990
Nguyễn Thị Năm ran a trading house in Hải Phòng called Cát Hanh Long and bought farmland in Thái Nguyên. In May 1945 her son carried 20,000 Indochinese piastres, then worth about 700 taels of gold, to the Viet Minh base. Nguyễn Minh Cần, interviewed by Radio Free Asia in 2006, said her family gave 100 taels more in the 1945 Gold Week and that she had hidden and fed party leaders including Trường Chinh, Phạm Văn Đồng and Lê Đức Thọ. Her son Nguyễn Hanh went with the delegation that received Bảo Đại's abdication. Her son Nguyễn Cát commanded a regiment of the 308th Division. Năm was classed a cruel landlord and shot at Đồng Bẩm. Both sons were sent to re-education camps and released in late 1956. Nhân Dân issue 125, of 21 to 25 July 1953, carried an article signed C.B. that accused "the landlord Cát Hanh Long" and her two sons of killing nearly 260 people. Nhân Dân's Hồ Chí Minh archive lists the article as his. Cần said the central land reform committee under Trường Chinh approved the death sentence. In 1987 her class label was changed to resistance landlord. In winter 1990 her family found her remains at the old Đồng Bẩm airfield, identified by a jade bracelet, and reburied her beside her husband at Đại Kim, Hanoi. In 2014 the family was still asking for a resistance medal and martyr status for her, without an answer.
Gifts to a movement buy no protection from its later laws; her donations did not appear in the case against her.
Nhân Dân, 1953, accused her of causing nearly 260 deaths: | Công an Nhân dân, the Ministry of Public Security's paper, headlined her in 2014 as a woman "wrongly dealt with" (xử lý oan):
