Stieg Larsson's partner of 30 years got nothing from the Millennium fortune because they never married

Stieg Larsson was a Swedish journalist who investigated far-right groups for the magazine Expo. He died of a heart attack at 50, before any of his three crime novels, the Millennium trilogy, was published. His only will, written in 1977 and never witnessed, left his assets to the Umeå branch of the Communist Workers League. It was invalid under Swedish law. He had lived with Eva Gabrielsson from 1974, about 30 years, but they never married. As an unmarried partner she had no right to inherit. His father, Erland, and brother, Joakim, inherited everything and hold the rights through the company Moggliden AB. The books have sold more than 100 million copies by the publisher's 2019 count. Moggliden's revenue has passed 600 million kronor since 2008. The family offered Gabrielsson about $3.3 million; she sought control of the literary work instead. She holds the computer containing about 200 pages of an unfinished fourth novel, which remains unpublished. The publisher then hired David Lagercrantz to write three sequels, published from 2015 to 2019, and Karin Smirnoff to write three more from 2022. In 2026 the rights remain with the Larsson family company, and the fourth Larsson manuscript is still unpublished.

What the law took from it

An unmarried partner has no inheritance rights in Sweden and many other countries; a valid, witnessed will is the only protection.

Family version vs. the record

Joakim Larsson: "we are Stieg's legal heirs"; the family says Expo received about 20 million kronor. Gabrielsson says she should control the work.
