Savva Morozov's mother pushed him out of the family mills, he was found shot in Cannes, and his insurance went to a Bolshevik actress
Savva Timofeyevich Morozov ran the Nikolskaya Manufactory, the family textile company whose 12 enterprises built the town of Orekhovo-Zuevo. His mother chaired its board. He gave 10,000 rubles to start the Moscow Art Theatre and paid money to the illegal newspaper Iskra; Gorky's memoirs put it at 24,000 rubles a year. In 1904 he insured his life for 100,000 rubles and gave the policy, payable to the bearer, to the actress Maria Andreyeva, a Marxist. After the 1905 strikes he wrote a memo asking for democratic freedoms for workers. His mother threatened to remove him from the business, and he withdrew. In April 1905, at his wife's and mother's request, doctors diagnosed a severe nervous disorder and sent him abroad. On 26 May 1905 he was found shot dead in his hotel room in Cannes. A note read "Please don't blame anyone for my death"; it had no date or signature. The police ruled it suicide. His widow said she saw a man running from the window, and relatives blamed the Bolsheviks. Andreyeva collected the 100,000 rubles and is reported to have given 60 percent to the Bolshevik party†. He was buried in Moscow's Rogozhskoye cemetery. After the October Revolution of 1917 all Morozov enterprises were nationalised. The family's worth had been over 110 million rubles.
A bearer insurance policy pays whoever holds it, not whoever the family expects.
