The regent who found the 14th Dalai Lama handed power to a rival in 1941, was arrested for plotting to take it back, and died in a Potala cell
Thupten Jampel Yeshe Gyaltsen, the fifth Reting Rinpoche, was born about 1911 to a poor family and studied at Sera Monastery. After the 13th Dalai Lama died, he was appointed regent in 1934. In 1933 he visited the lake of Chokhorgyal to look for signs of the reincarnation. In 1940 he asked the Chinese government to exempt the boy found, Lhamo Dhondup, from the golden urn lot drawing, and the request was approved. He left the regency after the boy was found, and Taktra Rinpoche replaced him at the start of 1941. Critics accused Reting of corruption; his defenders said the later charges were fabricated by a cabinet minister. In 1947 he was accused of organising an uprising against Taktra and arrested. Melvyn Goldstein's history devotes a chapter to the "Reting Conspiracy"†. He died in prison in the Potala on 8 May 1947. Poisoning is alleged; a Tibetan Assembly committee examined the body, and Tsarong reported no evidence of strangling. His reincarnation, born in 1948, was enthroned in 1955 and died in 1997. A seventh, born in 2000, was appointed by the Chinese government; the Tibetan government in exile does not recognise him.
A regent who steps aside on trust keeps no power to enforce the trust.
