The Church gave Raymond VI's county to the crusade leader and refused his body burial, and his granddaughter's childless marriage handed Toulouse to France

The papal legate Pierre de Castelnau excommunicated Raymond VI, Count of Toulouse, in 1207, and the Council of Avignon excommunicated him again. The crusade against the Cathars took his lands. In 1215 the Fourth Lateran Council gave his estates to the crusade leader Simon de Montfort and reserved only Provence and Beaucaire for Raymond's son. Raymond came back from exile in Aragon and retook Toulouse on 7 November 1217. Montfort was killed besieging it on 25 June 1218. Raymond died in August 1222, still excommunicated; a sudden illness had left him unable to speak a confession. His body went to the Knights Hospitaller in Toulouse and was refused Christian burial. A popular account says the coffin was still there, unburied, a century later†. The fate of his remains is unknown. In 1998 a sarcophagus found at the Hospitallers' former priory was briefly thought to be his; Toulouse's mayor asked Pope John Paul II to lift the excommunication, without success. His son Raymond VII made peace in 1229. He did public penance at Notre-Dame, tore down Toulouse's walls, and promised his only child, Joan, to Alphonse of Poitiers, brother of Louis IX. Joan and Alphonse inherited the county in 1249. They had no children and died within days of each other in August 1271, and Toulouse passed to the French crown.

What the law took from it

A peace treaty that marries the only heir to the enemy's brother is a sale of the estate with a delay.
