The Quandt fortune behind BMW used about 50,000 forced labourers, a 2011 family-funded study found

Günther Quandt owned textile, battery and arms companies. He married Magda Ritschel in 1921; they divorced in 1929. In December 1931 she married Joseph Goebbels at Gut Severin, an estate Quandt owned, with Hitler as witness. Quandt joined the Nazi party in 1933. From 1943 his battery maker AFA ran a concentration camp, a satellite of Neuengamme, on its Hanover-Stöcken factory site. Historian Ralf Stremmel counts 403 prisoner deaths there, 218 of them in March 1945. Quandt was interned in 1946 and released in 1948, classed only as a fellow traveller. He died in 1954. His sons Herbert and Harald, Magda's son, inherited control. In December 1959 BMW's board proposed a merger with Daimler-Benz; small shareholders blocked it, and by November 1960 the Quandts held two-thirds of BMW. Harald died when his private plane crashed in Piedmont in 1967. On 30 September 2007 ARD broadcast "Das Schweigen der Quandts" to 1.29 million viewers. The family then opened its archive to historian Joachim Scholtyseck. His 1,184-page study, published in 2011, found the group used about 50,000 forced labourers. The Süddeutsche Zeitung reviewer called Günther "a real collaborator". In October 2026 Forbes listed Herbert's children Stefan Quandt, with 23.6% of BMW and $23.1 billion, and Susanne Klatten, with 19.1% and $24 billion.

What the law took from it

A family that pays for the history of its own fortune can open the archive, but it cannot decide what the historian finds.

Record vs. record

The 2007 film said "countless" prisoners died at Stöcken; Stremmel (2010), citing published research, gives 403 deaths and more than 10,000 forced labourers housed there in total.
