Peter Sellers signed a trust for his daughter the day he collapsed; his widow kept a £4 million estate

Peter Sellers married actress Lynne Frederick in 1977. She was 22, almost 30 years younger than he was. She filed for divorce in 1979, and the couple then reunited. On July 22, 1980, at the Dorchester Hotel in London, Sellers signed a letter setting up a trust that would pay his daughter Victoria £20,000 at age 21. That day he collapsed. He died in a London hospital on July 24, 1980, at 54. The trust papers were never made official. Frederick inherited most of his estate, reported at £4 million. Each of his three children from his first two marriages, Michael, Sarah and Victoria, received a token sum, reported as £750 by The Independent and £800 by the auction house that sold the letter in 2010. In 1984 Frederick won more than $1 million in damages from director Blake Edwards and United Artists over Trail of the Pink Panther (1982), which combined old Sellers footage with new scenes. She married David Frost in 1981 and Barry Unger in 1983. Both marriages ended in divorce. She died in Beverly Hills on April 27, 1994, at 39. The 2010 auction estimate for the trust letter was up to £1,500. Sellers's ashes are at Golders Green Crematorium in London†.

What the law took from it

A signed letter that is not completed as a trust or a new will changes nothing; the old will stays in force.
