Pedro I left his heart to Porto, the city council and a church brotherhood fought over where to keep it, and Brazil borrowed it in 2022

Pedro declared Brazil independent in 1822 and became its emperor. He abdicated in 1831 and returned to Portugal. At four in the morning on 23 September 1834, dying of tuberculosis at Queluz Palace, he dictated last wishes, among them that his heart go to "the heroic city of Porto, theatre of my true glory". He died the next afternoon. Porto's city council prepared to keep the heart in the cathedral. The queen's government ordered it placed instead in the church of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Lapa. The heart sailed from Lisbon on 4 February 1835 and was received at Porto by a crowd counted at 10,000 to 12,000. The council approved a monument for the chancel on 25 April 1835. The brotherhood rejected the design. The council answered that it would be built its way or the council would ask the queen to move the heart to the cathedral. The brotherhood gave in, and the monument opened on 20 February 1837. The urn's key has stayed with the city council. The heart now sits in formaldehyde in a sealed glass vessel inside a silver urn. Pedro's body lay in Lisbon until 1972, when it was moved to the Independence Monument in São Paulo. For the 2022 bicentenary Porto lent the heart to Brazil. It arrived in Brasília on 22 August 2022, President Jair Bolsonaro received it the next day, and it was shown at the Itamaraty Palace until 5 September before returning to Lapa†.

What the law took from it

A bequest of a body part to a city still needs a named custodian, or the city's institutions will fight over it.

Record vs. record

Wikipedia gives February 1836 for the heart's voyage in one section and 1835 in another; the Lapa brotherhood's historian dates it 4 February 1835 from the brotherhood's minutes:
