Peary and Henson each fathered a son in Greenland, and Henson was moved beside Peary at Arlington in 1988

Robert Peary began a relationship with Aleqasina, an Inughuit girl of about 14, and they had at least two children, including a son, Kali. His assistant Matthew Henson had a son, Anaukaq, born in 1906 to Akatingwah. Henson never saw them after 1909. Peary claimed the North Pole in April 1909. In March 1911 Congress gave him its thanks and the rank of rear admiral. Henson spent about 30 years as a clerk at the US Customs House in New York. In 1944 Congress gave him a duplicate of the Peary expedition medal. Peary was buried at Arlington in 1920. Henson was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in New York in 1955. In 1986 Harvard neurobiologist S. Allen Counter found Kali and Anaukaq in Greenland, both in their eighties. In 1987 he brought them to the US, where Anaukaq laid a wreath at his father's grave. At Counter's request, President Reagan approved an exception to Arlington's rules in 1987. On 6 April 1988 Henson and his wife Lucy were reburied beside Peary and his wife Josephine, with a monument. In 1989 Wally Herbert concluded that Peary had not reached the Pole†. Anaukaq had seven children, and in 2009 his granddaughter Aviaq Henson was studying in Nuuk. Reports of Anaukaq's death differ: obituaries from 1987 against a 2009 report giving 1990.

What the law took from it

A child left out of a father's acknowledged family can still be documented and recognised decades later.
