Pancho Villa's grave was opened in 1926 and his head taken, and his widows' court fight ended with the government seizing his hacienda

In the 1920 Sabinas agreement Francisco "Pancho" Villa laid down arms in return for the Canutillo hacienda in Durango, given to him in full ownership, and an escort of 50 men. Historian Guadalupe Villa Guerrero puts Canutillo and its annexes at about 87,000 hectares. On 20 July 1923 gunmen killed him in Parral. Villa had married several women. María Luz Corral married him on 29 May 1911 and lived at Canutillo until 1922; Austreberta Rentería, mother of two of his sons, was there when he died, and Luz Corral was barred from the estate†. Courts twice upheld Luz Corral's marriage and recognised her as legal wife and heir†. In 1946 Congress recognised another woman, Soledad Seáñez, as a legitimate wife†. Villa Guerrero writes that a long lawsuit over his inheritance ended with the government taking the hacienda and everything in it, dividing the land among ejido farmers and turning the main house into a museum. On 5 February 1926 his grave in Parral was opened and the head cut off; a note said it would go to Columbus, New Mexico, the town Villa raided in 1916†. The head has not been found. In 1976 President Luis Echeverría had Villa's remains moved to the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico City. Luz Corral refused to attend. She died on 6 July 1981.

What the law took from it

Several marriages and no clear will turned a government land grant back into government land.

Family version vs. the record

Guadalupe Villa Guerrero (Instituto Mora) is Villa's granddaughter; her account of the inheritance lawsuit and seizure is the only non-Wikipedia source found for it:
