Nick Reiner, charged with killing Rob and Michele Reiner, sues for his $1.5 million trust fund
Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, died of knife wounds in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. Their son Nick, 32, was arrested that night and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty on February 23, 2026. An indictment made public on August 12, 2026 added a lying-in-wait allegation. On September 15, 2026, District Attorney Nathan Hochman said his office would not seek the death penalty. The charges are allegations; no trial date has been set. The money fight is in Los Angeles Superior Court. On December 2, 1993, the Reiners created a children's trust for Nick. His 2026 petition says it holds at least $1.5 million and was to pay half at age 30 and the rest at 35. He turned 30 on September 14, 2023, when about $558,000 was due, and received nothing. His June 8, 2026 petition said trustee Paul R. Kanin, in charge since February, refused to pay. His lawyer Alan Jackson withdrew†, and a public defender took over. The petition says his siblings Jake and Romy first agreed to pay Jackson, then reversed. Jodi Montgomery, later reported as trustee†, says Nick turned down the 2023 payment, is owed nothing until 35, and may be barred by California's slayer statute. If he dies, the money goes to his brother and sister. On October 23, 2026, the parties told Judge Ruben Garcia they had set a mediation for December 16.
A trust that must pay at fixed ages gives the trustee no clean way to stop a payout to a beneficiary in crisis, so the fight moves to court.
