Margot Fonteyn died in Panama in 1991 after her savings went to her paralysed husband's care, and a 1990 gala raised 250,000 pounds for her
In June 1964, while Margot Fonteyn danced with Rudolf Nureyev in Bath, her husband Roberto Arias was shot four times by a rival Panamanian politician, Alfredo Jimenez, and left a quadriplegic. She paid for his treatment at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and took him on most of her tours. Arias died in November 1989. Wikipedia reports she had spent her savings on his care, had no pension, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1989, and sold jewellery to pay for her treatment†. Nureyev helped pay her bills without being named†. A gala in May 1990 drew more than 2,000 guests including Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales, and raised 250,000 pounds for a trust fund for her. The venue is reported as Covent Garden and is not confirmed elsewhere†. She died on 21 February 1991, aged 71, after a long illness, and converted to Catholicism shortly before so she could be buried in Arias's tomb. A memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey on 2 July 1991. Nureyev, ill himself, attended neither service nor burial. No will or estate figure was found.
Paying for a spouse's lifetime care can exhaust savings, so a pension decides how the survivor lives.
