L'Wren Scott left her $9 million estate to Mick Jagger and wrote that she had left out her family on purpose

L'Wren Scott was born Luann Bambrough and raised by an adoptive Mormon family in Utah. She left at 17 to become a stylist and designer. On 17 March 2014 she was found dead in her Manhattan condominium, aged 49. Her death was ruled a suicide. Papers filed in Manhattan Surrogate's Court on 26 March 2014 left her entire estate, estimated at $9 million, to "Michael Philip Jagger", her partner. The estate held an $8 million condominium at 200 Eleventh Avenue, owned through a corporate name, and about $1 million in jewellery, clothing, furniture and cars. Her will said: "I have intentionally omitted to provide herein for any other my heirs." Her estranged older sister, Jan Shane, and her brother, Randy Bambrough, received nothing. The probate papers said the estate's liabilities were "unknown at this time". Accounts filed at Companies House in October 2013 showed her British company, LS Fashion, lost £3.5 million in 2012 and £2.5 million in 2011 and owed creditors millions of pounds. The filings did not show how much of the $9 million would remain after debts.

What the law took from it

A will that names one beneficiary should also say how business debts are to be paid.
