Louis Kahn died unidentified in a Penn Station restroom, owing hundreds of thousands of dollars, with three families at his funeral
Kahn had a heart attack in a Penn Station restroom on his way back from India. The address on his passport had been scratched out, and the police cable gave the wrong address, so it took two to three days to identify him. He died owing hundreds of thousands of dollars; one estimate puts his firm's debt at about $3 million in today's money. His official family was his wife, Esther, and their daughter, Sue Ann. Two other women came to the funeral. Anne Tyng, a partner in his firm, had a daughter by him, Alexandra. The landscape architect Harriet Pattison had a son by him, Nathaniel. The estate faced large debts, and his drawings and papers were acquired by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and placed at the University of Pennsylvania's architectural archives†. In 2003 Nathaniel Kahn released the documentary My Architect about his search for his father. Kahn was 73†. The National Assembly in Dhaka was completed in 1982, eight years after his death†.
A man with three households and one estate leaves the secret families nothing unless he writes them in.
