Loretta Young hid her daughter by Clark Gable in orphanages, then "adopted" her, and admitted the truth only in a book published after her death

In 1935 Loretta Young became pregnant by Clark Gable during the filming of The Call of the Wild. Gable was married. Young hid the pregnancy. Their daughter, Judy, was born on 6 November 1935. Weeks later she was placed in an orphanage. She spent about 19 months in hideaways and orphanages before Young announced that she had adopted her. Judy took the surname of Young's later husband, Tom Lewis. In 1950 Gable visited the house and kissed her forehead; she did not know he was her father. At about 23 her fiancé told her what Hollywood already said: Gable was her father. Gable never acknowledged her publicly. He died on 16 November 1960 after a heart attack, aged 59. Four months later his fifth wife, Kay, gave birth to his only acknowledged child, John Clark Gable, a posthumous son. At 31 Judy confronted her mother, who answered, "Yes, you are my sin." In 1994 Judy published a memoir, Uncommon Knowledge, naming Gable. Young did not speak to her for three years. Young died on 12 August 2000, and her posthumous autobiography confirmed Gable was the father. Judy Lewis died of cancer in Pennsylvania on 25 November 2011, aged 76. No record shows that she received anything from Gable's estate†.

What the law took from it

A child never acknowledged during the father's life usually has no claim on an estate already distributed to the acknowledged family.

Family version vs. the record

Young said for decades that Judy was adopted; her own posthumous autobiography said Judy was her biological daughter by Gable.
