Joe Louis owed the IRS more than $1 million and ended his life as a casino greeter in Las Vegas
Joe Louis held the world heavyweight title from 1937 to 1949. During World War II he gave purses from title fights to military relief funds and served in the US Army, fighting exhibition bouts for troops†. When he retired in 1949 he owed the Internal Revenue Service about $500,000 in back taxes. Interest compounded the debt to more than $1 million by 1960. He returned to the ring to pay it, losing to Ezzard Charles in 1950 and Rocky Marciano in 1951†. He later took jobs including official greeter at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Accounts differ on how the debt ended; one says the IRS settled, another that it forgave the balance. Louis died in Las Vegas in 1981. Arlington National Cemetery's rules did not cover him. At his family's request, President Ronald Reagan waived them, and Sergeant Joe Louis was buried there with full military honors.
Tax debt grows with interest after the income stops, and a champion's earnings can be gone long before the tax is paid.
