Idi Amin seized the Madhvani sugar estate in 1972; the widow came back to one working tractor, and the heirs split again in 2020

Muljibhai Madhvani, born in Porbandar, India, in 1894, bought 800 acres at Kakira, Uganda, in 1918 for a sugar factory. He died at Kakira in July 1958. His sons Jayant and Manubhai ran the group, and Jayant expanded it until it held 38 percent of Uganda's industrial investment. Jayant died in 1971. In 1972 Idi Amin expelled about 70,000 Asians and nationalised their property. The Madhvanis left with little money. At Kakira, sugar output fell from 3,000 tons a day in 1971 to 300 tons a month. Of 21,000 acres, 18,000 went back to bush. Jayant's widow, Meenaben, returned at President Milton Obote's invitation eight years after leaving; of the 120 tractors the family had left, one worked. In 1985 an arrangement gave Manubhai and his brother Mayur control of the Kakira factory, and left Meenaben and her son Nitin to rebuild the other assets. In January 1989 all the companies were put under Muljibhai Madhvani and Company. In June 2020 Nitin wrote to the State House anti-corruption unit accusing his sister Nimisha, Uganda's ambassador to Denmark, of using her position to take control of family assets. Nimisha declined to comment. The dispute was unresolved in August 2020. Jayant's three children own up to a fifth of the group's Ugandan assets.

What the law took from it

Recovering confiscated property returned the assets but not an agreed division among the heirs.
