Hindenburg's Neudeck estate was put in his son's name, and Hitler's government added tax-free land

The Hindenburg family had held Neudeck since 1755. By 1927 the estate was in debt. Elard von Oldenburg-Januschau raised money, mainly from the Reich Association of German Industry and the Reichslandbund, and bought it back. It was handed to Paul von Hindenburg on his 80th birthday, 2 October 1927. The deed was put in the name of his son Oskar. When this became public at the end of 1932, opponents said it was done to avoid inheritance tax. On 19 January 1933 the Centre MP Joseph Ersing raised misuse of Osthilfe farm-aid money in the Reichstag budget committee. Hitler was appointed eleven days later. On 27 August 1933 Prussia added the Langenau domain and the Preussenwald forest to Neudeck. The added land was to stay free of taxes while a male Hindenburg heir held it†. Hindenburg died at Neudeck and was buried at the Tannenberg Memorial. In January 1945 the coffins were moved west and Oskar fled. The manor was burned and its ruins demolished in 1950†. US forces held the coffins by April 1945, and the British refused Oskar's request to move them to Hanover. In August 1946 they were buried in the Elisabethkirche in Marburg, where they remain in 2026†.

What the law took from it

Putting title in an heir's name during life avoids inheritance tax but leaves a public record that opponents can use.

Family version vs. the record

Oskar sued over Erwein von Aretin's 1954 book, which said he received illegal Osthilfe money, and won in 1956 ( Contemporary press records the 1933 land gift and its tax terms (
