Gianni Versace was shot dead in Miami and left half his fashion house to his 11-year-old niece

On 15 July 1997 Andrew Cunanan shot Gianni Versace outside his Miami Beach mansion. Cunanan killed himself on a houseboat eight days later. Versace's will left his 50 percent of Gianni Versace S.p.A. to his niece Allegra, the 11-year-old daughter of his sister Donatella. His brother Santo held 30 percent and Donatella 20 percent. Allegra and her brother Daniel received his art collection. His partner of 15 years, Antonio D'Amico, was left 50 million lire a month for life and the right to live in any of his homes. The homes belonged to the company, and after negotiation D'Amico received a fraction of the pension. Santo became chief executive and Donatella creative director. Allegra took control of her stake on her 18th birthday in June 2004. In February 2014 Blackstone bought 20 percent for 210 million euros. On 25 September 2018 Michael Kors agreed to buy Versace at an enterprise value of 1.83 billion euros, about 2.12 billion dollars. The family took 150 million euros of the price in shares of the buyer, Capri Holdings. Capri sold Versace to Prada, announced in April 2025 at 1.25 billion euros and completed in December 2025 for 1.375 billion dollars. Donatella became chief brand ambassador in March 2025. D'Amico died on 6 December 2022. In 2026 Prada owns the house, Pieter Mulier was named chief creative officer from 1 July, and Gianni's ashes are in the family vault at Moltrasio, on Lake Como.

What the law took from it

A will that gives a child half of a family company hands control to whoever runs it until the child comes of age.
