Reign of King Wu Ding of Shang

Fu Hao led the Shang king's armies, the oracle said her childbirth was "not good" because she had a girl, and hers is the only Shang royal tomb found intact

Fu Hao was one of the many wives of King Wu Ding. Oracle-bone inscriptions show her leading the king's best generals against neighbouring peoples and performing ancestor sacrifices. Wu Ding asked the oracle whether her childbearing would be good. The bone records that 31 days later she bore a girl, and the result is written as not good. She died about 1200 BC, before the king†. After her death Wu Ding hoped she would find a good match among the deities. In 1976 Zheng Zhenxiang's team found her tomb at Yinxu, outside the main royal cemetery. Hers is the only Shang royal tomb found intact and excavated by archaeologists. It held 468 bronzes, including more than 200 ritual vessels and 130 weapons, 755 jades, 564 bone objects, and 6,900 cowrie shells used as money. Four large axes, one bearing her name, lay with her. Six sacrificed dogs lay beneath the coffin and 16 human skeletons along its edge. Her tomb was restored and opened to the public in 1999.

What the law took from it

A wife's estate can be counted to the last shell when it is buried with her and the grave is never robbed.
