Fairuz's nephews blocked her from staging her late husband's musical without their approval, and a Beirut court stopped her performing his brother's work

The brothers Assi and Mansour Rahbani wrote the songs and musicals that Fairuz sang. Fairuz married Assi. Assi died in 1986. Mansour died in January 2009. His sons, Marwan, Ghadi and Osama, then said she needed their permission to perform the Rahbani Brothers' work and must pay for each performance. Osama said his father had a "gentleman's agreement" with Fairuz and that shows in Damascus and Sharjah in 2008 were unpaid. In 2010 Fairuz planned to stage "Yaish Yaish", a 1970 Rahbani musical, at the Casino du Liban. The nephews wrote to the venue that the heirs' approval was required, and the show was cancelled. NPR reported that a Beirut court ordered her to stop performing material that involved Mansour's contribution. Her daughter, Rima Rahbani, said royalties should go through SACEM, the Paris rights society Mansour joined in 1963, and that Fairuz was suing the nephews for damages. Fans protested in Beirut. The outcome of the claims has not been reported†. Her son Ziad Rahbani, Assi's son and a composer, died on 26 July 2025, aged 69.

What the law took from it

Joint authors who never put their split in writing leave their heirs a veto over each other's work.
