The Stonegate mansion shootings during the Davis divorce, 1976

Fort Worth oil heir Cullen Davis was tried for killing his stepdaughter and for hiring a hitman to kill his divorce judge, was acquitted, and later listed $865 million in debts

Kenneth W. Davis, a Fort Worth oilman, founded KenDavis Industries International, which made goods for the petroleum industry. He died in 1968 and his estate was split equally among his three sons. His son T. Cullen Davis separated from his second wife, Priscilla, in 1974. A judge let her live in the Stonegate mansion during the divorce. On 2 August 1976 an intruder shot four people there. Andrea Wilborn, Davis's 12-year-old stepdaughter, and Stan Farr, Priscilla's boyfriend, died. Priscilla Davis and Gus Gavrel Jr. were wounded; Gavrel was paralysed and identified Davis as the gunman. Davis was arrested that night. He was worth more than $100 million and was then the richest murder defendant in US history. He was acquitted. In 1978 he was arrested again, accused of hiring a hitman to kill Priscilla and the judge in his divorce. He was acquitted again. In 1982 he broke about $1 million of jade, ivory and gold art objects with a hammer in his driveway at the urging of evangelist James Robison. In July 1987 he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, listing debts of $865 million and assets under $2 million; creditors included the IRS and Andrea's mother and father, who had wrongful death suits. He settled with Farr's family in 1990 and paid Gavrel a settlement. Priscilla died in 2001 and Gavrel in 2018. In 2021 the mansion was due to be demolished. Davis was 87 that year.

What the law took from it

An inheritance split equally among sons left each brother's share exposed to his own divorce, criminal defence and debts.
