Pink Chaffin said his dead father led him to a second will hidden in Genesis 27, and a North Carolina court admitted it in 1925

Kind 1. James L. Chaffin farmed near Mocksville and had four sons. A will dated 1905 left his estate, including 102 acres, to one son, Marshall. Chaffin died after a fall in 1921 and the 1905 will was probated. Marshall died in 1922 and the property passed to his widow, Susie. In June 1925 another son, James "Pink" Chaffin, said his father appeared to him in dreams and told him where to find his will. Pink went to his brother John's house, where their father's overcoat was kept, and found a roll of paper sewn inside the pocket that sent him to Genesis 27 in his father's old Bible. On 6 July 1925, with his neighbour Thomas Blackwelder as witness, Pink found the Bible in a drawer at his mother's house. Folded into the pages of Genesis 27 was a will dated 16 January 1919 that divided the property equally among the four sons and asked them to care for their mother. In the fall of 1925 the will was offered for probate. Ten people who knew Chaffin's hand testified it was his. During a recess Susie agreed to a settlement and the 1919 will was admitted. In 1926 the Society for Psychical Research sent a lawyer, who found no sign the family was lying. Writer Mary Roach later had a handwriting expert examine both wills; he concluded that if the 1905 signature was genuine, the 1919 one was a forgery.

What the law took from it

A later will kept in a private place helps no one unless someone knows where it is; this one surfaced four years late and was settled, not tried.

Record vs. record

Mental Floss reports the expert's view as conditional on the 1905 signature being genuine; the Anthony Campbell review reports that he called the will "undoubtedly a forgery":
