Lord Brocket was jailed for five years for insurance fraud in 1996, and his trustees leased out Brocket Hall
Charles Nall-Cain became 3rd Baron Brocket in 1967, at 15, while at Eton, and inherited Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire from his grandfather. His great-grandfather, a partner in the brewer Walker Cain, had bought the house and taken his title from it. In the 1980s and early 1990s Lord Brocket was known for his cars and owned 42 Ferraris at one point. He built the estate's first golf course in 1992. In 1996 he was convicted of insurance fraud over cars he claimed had been stolen† and sentenced to five years. He served two and a half. The estate was held through a trust. The Brocket Hall trustees sold a 60-year leasehold in 1997. The lease went to the German hotelier Dieter Klostermann, and from 2016 the club was run by the Chinese businessman Yu Songbo. In February 2020 the golf and country club was sold out of administration for the second time in five years, after HM Revenue & Customs filed a winding-up petition over a tax bill. The operating company had shown debts of £6.16 million. The buyer was Brocket Hall (Holding) Limited. Lord Brocket finished fourth on I'm a Celebrity in 2004. On 30 August 2025 he was charged with rape and sexual assault. His counsel says he will plead not guilty, and the trial is set for 1 November 2027 at Isleworth Crown Court. In 2026 he holds the title and the freehold through the trust†. His heir is his son Alexander.
A trust that holds the house can keep it in the family when the owner goes to prison, at the price of letting it to outsiders for decades.
Wikipedia says the lease to Klostermann began in 1996; Brocket Hall's own history says the trustees sold a 60-year leasehold in 1997; German Wikipedia gives a 50-year lease. Brocket Hall's history dates the purchase to 1921; English Wikipedia says 1923.
