Brandon Lee was killed on the set of The Crow in 1993 by a bullet fragment fired from a prop gun, and his mother and fiancee settled with the producers for an undisclosed sum
Brandon Lee, 28, son of Bruce Lee, was shot in the abdomen during a scene at Carolco Studios in Wilmington. The .44 Magnum was supposed to hold only blanks. Investigators found that the tip of a dummy cartridge had broken off, lodged in the barrel, and was fired by a later blank. The bullet lodged near his spine. He died hours later in hospital. On 27 April 1993 District Attorney Jerry Spivey announced the death was due to negligence by the crew and that he would not prosecute the production company, Crowvision. North Carolina labor officials fined the production; the amount is reported as $84,000, later reduced to $55,000, and one source gives $77,000†. Lee's mother, Linda Lee Cadwell, sued for negligence, and his fiancee, Eliza Hutton, was covered by the same settlement in October 1993 for an undisclosed amount. The suit named the producers and other companies and individuals†. Lee is buried beside his father in Lake View Cemetery, Seattle†. In 2021, after a similar prop-gun death on the film Rust, Hutton called Lee's death an avoidable tragedy.
A wrongful-death settlement can be sealed, so the sum paid to the family is never public.
