Boris Berezovsky lost his case against Abramovich, died seven months later, and a judge called his estate hopelessly insolvent

Boris Berezovsky lived in exile in Britain from 2000. He sued Roman Abramovich for more than $5 billion over Sibneft and Rusal shares. On 31 August 2012 Mrs Justice Gloster dismissed the claim and said she did not believe his evidence. He owed more than $100 million in legal costs. In September 2012 he settled with Badri Patarkatsishvili's family. In October he withdrew his remaining London claims and agreed to pay the defendants' costs. His former partner Yelena Gorbunova sued him in December 2012. She said he had promised her £5 million from the sale of their £25 million Wentworth Park estate, and in January 2013 a judge froze two French properties. On 23 March 2013 he was found dead on the bathroom floor of his home in Ascot, a scarf around his neck tied to the shower rail. On 27 March 2014 the Berkshire coroner recorded an open verdict. On 29 April 2013 the court made Nicholas Wood and Kevin Hellard of Grant Thornton receivers of the estate. They became general administrators in April 2014 and trustees under an insolvency administration order in January 2015. Creditors included Aeroflot, the Samara regional government and Abramovich, owed about £35 million in costs. The Patarkatsishvili family paid the estate a little under $105 million in March 2014. On 22 July 2016 Mr Justice Arnold called the estate "hopelessly insolvent." About £34 million remained against claims running into hundreds of millions of pounds, and he dismissed Gorbunova's claims to the money.

What the law took from it

Litigation costs are debts of the estate, and a lost lawsuit can consume a fortune before the heirs see any of it.
