Bernard Tapie was beaten in his home six months before he died owing the state more than 400 million euros, and his widow lost her flat
In 2008 Bernard Tapie received about 400 million euros from an arbitration over Crédit Lyonnais's sale of his stake in Adidas. The courts later annulled the award and ordered him to repay. In February 2020 an appeal court set the debt at 438 million euros. His companies were placed in judicial liquidation in April 2020. Around 00:30 on 4 April 2021, four men broke into his estate, the Moulin de Breuil in Combs-la-Ville. They struck him on the head with a club while he sat in a chair. They tied up his wife, Dominique, and pulled her by the hair. She freed herself and ran to a neighbour. Tapie had cancer of the stomach and oesophagus. He died on 3 October 2021, aged 78. His heirs were his widow and four children. Under French law they could accept the estate and its debts, accept it up to its net value, or renounce it. In February 2022 Paris Match reported that Dominique owed nearly 600 million euros, the estate was worth at most 300 million, and the family was preparing to renounce. She lost her flat on the rue de Grenelle, which she had inherited from her grandmother. Jean-Louis Borloo rented her an apartment. The Hôtel de Cavoye in Paris and the Saint-Tropez villa La Mandala were sold. A house in Neuilly, ruled part of his estate by the Cour de cassation on 5 April 2023, was set for auction on 26 June 2025 at 9 million euros.
Heirs can refuse an estate whose debts exceed its assets, but property held in a spouse's name can still be pulled back into it.
