Arthur Miller kept his son Daniel with Down syndrome out of public view and left him an equal share of the estate six weeks before he died
Daniel Miller was born in 1966 with Down syndrome. Around age four he was placed in the Southbury Training School in Connecticut, an institution later cited for dangerous conditions. Miller did not visit him there, according to reporting on Vanity Fair's September 2007 article by Suzanna Andrews. His mother, photographer Inge Morath, visited regularly. Daniel was left out of Miller's memoir and public life. According to NPR, six weeks before he died Miller made Daniel a direct heir, equal to his three other children. WBUR reported that the estate went to Daniel and the three others in equal parts. Estimates of the estate's value vary between $14 million and $20 million and rest on low-quality sources†. Daniel later left Southbury and lives with a foster family in Connecticut. His story became the 2018 play Fall at the Huntington Theatre in Boston.
A child with a disability inherits by name only if the will names the child, and a will can correct a silence kept for decades.
