Abby Choi's former husband and his father and brother are on trial for her murder over a flat she had put in her father-in-law's name

Abby Choi was a 28-year-old Hong Kong model and influencer. She had two children with her former husband, Alex Kwong. Prosecutors say she was wealthy and the Kwong family was not. In 2019 she bought a luxury flat for her former in-laws and registered it in the name of her former father-in-law, Kwong Kau, a former police officer, to avoid higher taxes. When she tried to sell it in 2022, he at first refused. Her former chauffeur testified that she had cash-flow problems from early 2022 and that he drove her to hand Kwong Kau an envelope said to hold HK$600,000. A shop assistant testified that on 8 February 2023 a man identified on CCTV as Kwong Kau bought a meat mincer and a large soup pot for HK$8,700. Choi went missing on 21 February 2023, days after Paris Fashion Week. Her remains were found on 24 February in a village house in Tai Po, reportedly in a cooking pot and a refrigerator. Alex Kwong, 31, Kwong Kau, 68, and his other son Anthony Kwong, 35, are charged with murder and with preventing the lawful burial of a body. All three pleaded not guilty to murder. The two sons pleaded guilty to preventing burial; Kwong Kau denies it. The prosecutor, Charlotte Draycott, told the jury: "Money seems to be the root cause of this case." Status on 27 October 2026: on trial before a nine-member jury in the High Court of Hong Kong; no verdict.

What the law took from it

Property registered in a relative's name to save tax belongs to that relative in law, and recovering it puts the owner in open conflict with the family holding it.

Record vs. record

The Standard (January 2026) said the trial was set to begin on 21 September 2026; Oxygen reports the prosecution opened on 30 September 2026:
